Introduction / History

The Nias Batu people live on the island of Nias, off the western coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. They speak a dialect of the Nias language, which belongs to the Austronesian language family.

The Nias Batu have a long history, marked by their unique megalithic traditions, clan-based social structure, and distinctive architecture, including their traditional wooden houses. Over the centuries, the Nias Batu have maintained their cultural identity despite outside influences, including colonial rule and increased contact with the broader Indonesian society.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most Nias Batu people live in rural villages, where agriculture is the main source of livelihood. Families work together to cultivate rice, yams, and vegetables, and some also raise pigs, chickens, and goats. Fishing and gathering forest products supplement their diet. Meals are typically centered around rice, with fish, vegetables, and locally available meat providing variety. Family ties are strong, and extended families often live close together, supporting one another in daily life and during important events. Community celebrations, such as weddings and traditional festivals, are significant occasions that feature music, dance, and communal feasts, reflecting the Nias Batu's deep sense of community and hospitality.

What Are Their Beliefs?

About two-thirds of the Nias Batu are Christian, with most identifying as Protestant. Christianity shapes much of their community life, including values, customs, and celebrations. Church attendance, prayer, and the observance of Christian holidays are important aspects of daily life. In some areas, traditional beliefs and practices are blended with Christian faith, especially in ceremonies related to family and agriculture. While the gospel is present among the Nias Batu, some ancestral customs and beliefs still influence their culture.

What Are Their Needs?

Many Nias Batu communities face challenges related to limited access to quality education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. Young people often leave their villages to seek work in cities, which can affect family structures and community life. Although the gospel is known among the Nias Batu, there is a need for ongoing discipleship, leadership development, and spiritual renewal. The Nias Batu also require encouragement and resources to address both their physical and spiritual challenges, trusting in the mercy and provision of Jesus Christ.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Nias Batu people would experience improved access to education, healthcare, and sustainable economic opportunities.
Ask God to strengthen the faith of Nias Batu believers and raise up mature disciples who can share the hope of Christ with others.
Pray for spiritual renewal and unity within Nias Batu churches, so that they may be a light to their communities and beyond.
Pray that the Nias Batu would become active participants in the global body of Christ, sharing the gospel with other peoples.
